Though originally an Italian saint, Santa Lucia has been warmly welcomed into the hearts of the Scandinavian peoples. Her day falls on December 13th when it is the tradition for the young girl of the family to dress in white, with a red sash, and, wearing a crown of evergreen and lighted candles, to bring an early breakfast of coffee and bullar to the rest of the family. Here is Saint Lucia herself, with her tray, wreath of candles, and sash, symbolizing the approach of the Solstice and hope for the New Year.
