Throughout all Europe, circle designs are symbols of the Sun, and of completion. In the countryside of Austria, a land known for its fine wines, this piece was traditionally made during the Grape Harvest. It was said this design ensures bright clear weather to ripen the grapes and to bring in a good harvest. The eight spokes are always made with a “whisp” weave to represent the rays of the sun blessing the crop; the number eight is sacred to the ancient Gaul spirit of the grain. It is said to ensure mirth and good fortune.
